bird jugs in my studio
At the end of the day it was nice to have some stoneware bird jugs to show for my efforts. These have incised textures and a thin coating of white slip over the top. I hope to get them dry enough for the next firing of my wood fired kiln. The firing should happen next week sometime, and I will be glazing from tomorrow onwards.
I am rather fond of the bird jug shape, and in fact made my first one several years ago. I gave that one (shown below) a coat of a glaze that was equal parts of feldspar, china clay, and whiting with an additional 2% copper carbonate added.
This was fired to about cone 10 in my electric kiln. The dark areas are where the glaze was thick and crystals have formed. If the glaze is put on too thickly and is fired a little too high, it can run, but is otherwise reasonably stable. It needs to be quite thin for a good green colour.
